Nutbag Boss Fires a Woman For Getting Cancer

I read an article recently on Huffington Post and was outraged. The title: "A Woman Told Her Boss About a Devastating Cancer Diagnosis. He Responded By Firing a Her."*

The woman in question is named Carol Jumper had worked for an oral surgery center for the last 12 years...and was fired for being diagnosed with cancer (which is illegal under the ADA). To make matters worse, she was fired via a handwritten letter. She was not even given the courtesy of a face-to-face discussion of her condition.

Her former employer, Dr. George Visnich, now believes himself to be a victim because that letter of dismissal has gone viral, with an understandably negative reaction. He claims she was always welcome to come back, but this is never said or even hinted at in letter to her.

What a contrast to my mother's employer, who did everything he could to help her work as long as possible after being diagnosed with breast cancer. This includes hiring extra help and allowing her to work from home. During her final hospital stay, her co-workers brought food for her family to the hospital and were just an amazing source of support. Her pallbearers were co-workers, right beside her son (her employer would have done so, but had a recent quadruple bypass.) They closed the office for the day so they could all attend the funeral. They have my everlasting appreciation and admiration.

People like this nutbag oral surgeon are the reason why so many people with disabilities and illnesses are afraid to wheel out of the handicapped stall (our version of coming out of the closet.) It's an all too common topic in support groups, websites, workshops and publications for people with disabilities.

I know this fear firsthand: I worked for years after my diagnosis with multiple sclerosis. I never disclosed to any employer or supervisor that I had MS. As I gradually got sicker, I found tricks & made excuses to keep my employers and co-workers from discovering my secret. Even after a terrible bout with  pneumonia and a series of accidents (including burns and dislocating my thumb), I kept mum. Only when my daughter's physical therapist told me my child required more attention than a day care could be reasonably expected to provide did I finally leave the job market. In my letter of resignation, no mention of my illness was ever made.

I understand completely the fear that should your medical condition be made known, your job will disappear. At the time, being let go (or given "busy work" out of sympathy) was frightening and repulsive to me. I was certain they would treat me differently, and not in a positive way. I was very much afraid of being Too Sick To Employ. So are millions of my disabled brethren, hiding in our disabled stalls, unsure of what the impact would be if we dared wheel out. And as we see in this case, this fear is all too reasonable.

"But that's illegal! What about the ADA?" you say.

Well, you're right: it would have been illegal to fire me based on my disability. It was most definitely illegal for Dr. Nutbag to fire his cancer-fighting employee. Unfortunately, it happens with alarming frequency. [STATS]

The difference between those many cases and this one, is thus: most employers will NEVER tell you that your disease is why they are firing you/laying you off. They will find another excuse. And in states with at-will employment? They do not even have to go to the trouble of making the excuse in order to show you the door.

"But you can sue!"

Yes...if you have the money to do so. And what with medical bills and now no job, good luck finding someone who can afford it. The sad fact is that many, many disabled and temporarily ill persons cannot afford to not work. They certainly can't afford a lawyer to boot.

"But does this particular woman have a case?"

Absolutely. But only because the nutbag boss in question not only fired her for her diagnosis, but put it in writing. In his own hand. On his professional letterhead. His lawyer probably had a full-blown conniption over it. I'm talking a hire-an-exorcist-the-demons-of-dumbassery-have-clearly-taken-up-residence-in-this-doctor's-hand type conniption.

For almost everyone else, suing under the ADA for being fired due to illness or disability becomes your word against your employer's.

Dr. Nutbag contends that he fired Ms. Jumper in order to make it "easier" to apply for some sort of government assistance. The problem with that excuse is twofold:

What was she expected to live on in the (on average) three to six months before her case was approved (and that's just assuming it will be, which is not a safe assumption to make here.)

2) When did Ms. Jumper ever ASK to be fired for this sort of "help"? Dr. Nutbag never had the decency to inquire as to what her plans were or, heaven forfend, what his office could do to help.

I personally rate this "I fired her for her own good" excuse on the Bullshit Meter as being somewhere between "I thought I fed the meter" and "I had no idea that oral foreplay was considered sex, my bad."

Is it unreasonable for medical professionals to understand the particulars of the ADA?** Does Dr. Nutbag not have an office manager who would be reasonably aware of the guidelines? Or an attorney he could call to bounce off the whole "she's got cancer can I give her the boot" idea? For crying out loud, a simple Google search would have shown this man that people with cancer (or a history of it) are protected from employment discrimination by federal law!

Everything Dr. Nutbag did in this situaton shows his true colors so clearly even Cyndi Lauper could not improve upon it. He had zero regard for Ms. Jumper's condition or her needs. There were no flowers sent, no card passed around the office for co-workers to sign, no offers of help, not the courtesy of a phone call or even a Facebook status. How she felt and what she needed never crossed this man's tiny mind. His only thought when told an employee of twelve years was now fighting cancer was, "Cancer? Nope, can't work here anymore. Don't let the door hit you where the Good Lord split you!"

Not only that...he believes HE is the victim here because someone had the nerve to expose his shocking lack of empathy, his painful lack of understanding about the law, and his total absence of human decency to the world.

And this man is a doctor.

Ms. Jumper, you are in my thoughts and prayers. You deserved better. I am sorry you didn't get it from your employer. I sincerely hope you do get what you deserve: justice in a court of law, and a clean bill of health from a doctor who is far more compassionate and competent than your former employer.

Ms. Jumper's friends have set up a Facebook group to support her. It's called "Bumper's Buddies," and the people there are just wonderful. I for one am glad to see that although her boss is not at all supportive during her fight with cancer, her friends and even complete strangers from around the country are.

May G-d bless her and her family.

Nutbag Parents Give New Meaning to "Take Your Kids To Work Day"

Last week was "Take Your Daughters To Work Day." My husband took our middle child to his office. She helped him file. They had lunch together. She got to see how Daddy makes a living.

These nutbags had the same idea.

BAD idea.

Erika Santana, 23, was accused on Wednesday of driving a getaway minivan with her 2 young kids (ages 4 years and 5 months) inside, fleeing with them after the baby's father, 22-year-old Hugo Lantigua, and his friend, 19-year-old Pedro Camillo, burglarized two homes in Queens, New York.

Santana, Lantigua and Camillo face charges including burglary, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. The could serve up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

"It is unthinkable that a mother and father would put their children in harm's way while allegedly committing these crimes. It is even more unimaginable that they would allegedly do so with a loaded handgun in their vehicle," Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

Nutbag Kills 2 Over Lice

Apparently, for some people, lice is much more serious than just having an itchy head and needing to shell out a few bucks for lice shampoo.

For some people, it's worth killing over.

In Kazan, a Russian town 430 miles east of Moscow, a 26-year-old karate expert has been charged with beating to death a 61-year-old woman and her son. He apparently burst into their home, which was the room next to his in a hostel, and used karate moves to beat them to death. The husband of the dead woman was also beaten with the karate moves, but the 58-year-old survived his injuries.

The reason? According to state investigator Eduard Abdulllin: "The family were poor and drank a lot. He blamed them for infections his wife and the entire corridor with lice."

The suspect, who studied karate for seven years, faces life in prison if convicted.

Mr. Miyagi would be very disappointed.

Nutbag Judges: Jailing Kids For $$$

In Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, the juvenile court system was once a model of efficency: efficent corruption, that is. An accused minor would be brought in, often without a lawyer (violating the 1967 Supreme Court ruling gaurenteeing minors the right to counsel), and given a "speedy trial" lasting only minutes. Following the McTrial, these youths were sentenced to detention centers for even the most minor of offenses and often against the recommendations of probation officers assigned to the cases. Many had never been arrested before.

It was fast. It was uniform. And it was making the judges stinking rich.

Two of those nutbag judges, Luzerne County Judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan, were charged on Januuary 26 with taking $2.6 million dollars in payoffs between 2003 and 2006 to send teens to one of two privately run youth detention centers run by PA Child Care LLC and its sister company, Western PA Child Care LLC. Shortly after charges were brought to bear, both men were removed from the bench by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. They pleaded guilty to fraud today in federal court, earning them sentences of more than seven years in jail.

Although Ciavarella, age 58, denies he recieved kickbacks for sentencing minors to the two detention centers in question, he penned a letter in which he admitted he "disgraced his judgeship." The judge, who presided over Luzerne County’s juvenile court for 12 years, also wrote: “My actions have destroyed everything I worked to accomplish and I have only myself to blame.”

Conahan, age 56, has thus far refused to comment on the case.

As of yet, no one associated with the youth detention centers have been charged. The investigation is on-going. Mark Sheppard, attorney for Robert J. Powell (who co-owned PA Child Care and Western PA Child Care until June), insists his client was a victim of extortion. “Bob Powell never solicited a nickel from these judges and really was a victim of their demands,” he said. “These judges made it very plain to Mr. Powell that he was going to be required to pay certain monies.”

In addition to removing the robes of the judges, the high court has launched an investigation to determine whether any of the cases involve warrant the action. Hundreds or perhaps even thousands of juvenile offenders' records could potentially be expunged.

“I’ve never encountered, and I don’t think that we will in our lifetimes, a case where literally thousands of kids’ lives were just tossed aside in order for a couple of judges to make some money,” said Marsha Levick, an attorney with the Philadelphia-based Juvenile Law Center, which is representing hundreds of youths sentenced in Wilkes-Barre.

Detention centers are not uncommon in Pennsylvania. Counties contract with the privately-run centers, alloting them either a fixed overall fee or a certain amount per youth, per day. In Luzerne County, Conahan is accused of shutting down the county-run juvenile prison in 2002. He then assisted the two private companies in securing tens of millions of dollars in contracts, a percentage of which was dependent on the number of juvenile offenders residing in the centers. PA Child Care, for example, was awared a 20-year contract worth an estimated $58 million (this contract was later canceled by the county as exorbitant).

Ciaverella has been under fire from area youth advocacy groups for several years. The groups accused Ciavarella of violating the constitutional rights of children. The judge sent a quarter of his juvenile defendants to detention centers from 2002 to 2006, compared with a statewide rate of one in 10.

They thought he was cruel. They thought he was harsh.

Now, they know why.

Nutbag Teacher Has Sex with Five Students

Accused Teacher Refuses to Talk to Police

COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 1) - A middle-school teacher accused of having sex with at least five boys was fired and remained in jail Thursday after she refused to speak with police about the charges, authorities said.

Police began investigating Allenna Williams Ward, 23, after school officials in Clinton recovered a note containing inappropriate messages, police said.

Ward, who is married, had sexual encounters in the past three months with the 14- and 15-year-old boys at the school, at a motel, in a park and behind a restaurant, according to arrest warrants.

Some of the victims were students at Bell Street Middle School, where Ward taught, authorities said.

Clinton Public Safety Director John Thomas said it was a difficult time for the district. "Teachers are supposed to be role models as well as being those people who take care of and protect our children," Thomas said.

Ward, who was fired Wednesday, is charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor and lewd acts on a minor, according to arrest warrants.

Nutbag Mom Uses Child as Weapon

I am seriously, completely, sick to my stomach after reading this:

Prosecutor: Mom used baby to beat boyfriend
October 9, 2006
Associated Press

ERIE, Pa. - A woman used her 4-week-old baby as a weapon in a domestic dispute, swinging the infant through the air and striking her boyfriend with the child, authorities said.

The boy was in serious but stable condition Monday at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, police said.

"Never, never, never. I can never remember anything like this," District Attorney Bradley Foulk told the Erie Times-News.

Chytoria Graham, 27, of Erie, was charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and simple assault. She was held Monday in the Erie County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.

The infant, whose name was not released, suffered a fractured skull and some bleeding in the brain, authorities said. His head hit Graham's boyfriend, the baby's father, police Lt. Dan Spizarny said.

Authorities removed four other children from Graham's home and placed them with the Erie County Office of Children and Youth, Foulk said.

Nutbags and Their Unmentionables

Injured pair see red as flying bra triggers rollover accident on I-75

With a supportive brace around his neck and an arm in a sling yesterday, James Campbell agreed the incident was like a bad episode of Girls Gone Wild.

Mr. Campbell was driving north late Tuesday afternoon on I-75, just south of Perrysburg, when he swerved to avoid something coming toward him. His Dodge Neon lurched into the median and flipped several times.

He ended up with a helicopter ride to Toledo Hospital, a fractured vertebra in his neck, and a broken thumb. His passenger, Jeff Long, is still at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center with a broken rib and possible liver damage.

So, what was the unidentified flying object? It wasn't a piece of tire, a rock, or even an animal.

It was a red bra, previously hung on the antenna of a Mercury Sable occupied by four teenage girls who, well, went a little wild. And the Ohio Highway Patrol is considering charges against them.

Mr. Long, 47, of Toledo, said he and Mr. Campbell, 37, also of Toledo, saw the girls sticking their pierced tongues out and making inappropriate gestures toward them. He said one girl climbed from the back of the car to the front, hung a red bra on the antenna, and rolled up the window.

"Usually a girl will make eye contact and you'll just wave and that will be it. I don't know what those girls were trying to do," Mr. Campbell said. "They went a little overboard and me and my partner got the worst of it."

Trooper Chris Hasty said she has identified three of the girls in the car and is looking for the fourth. All are 17.

Trooper Hasty said witnesses have corroborated Mr. Campbell's story, saying the girls flashed other motorists. Neither Mr. Campbell nor Mr. Long said they saw any skin.

Mr. Campbell, who was tossed from the car as it flipped, was cited for not wearing a seat belt and for failure to maintain control of his vehicle. He's a little upset that, so far, he's the only one to get a ticket.

"I get cited and I'm not even the one who did anything," Mr. Campbell said. "What's the world coming to where 17-year-old girls would do something like that on the highway?"

Despite the injuries, Mr. Campbell figures it could have been worse. "It could've been a whole pile of cars instead of one that flipped. That wouldn't have been good at all," he said.

Nutbag Mom Goes to Prison for Not Treating Child's Piercing

Woman gets prison time for not treating daughter's illness

A Boston mother was sentenced to 18 months in prison and another 12 months of probation today for endangering her daughter, who nearly died last year from an untreated infection caused by a navel piercing.

Deborah Robinson, 39, faced a maximum of five years in prison for the felony conviction of recklessly or wantonly permitting substantial bodily injury to a child. She will get credit for the 14 months she spent in jail awaiting trial.

She was convicted on Oct. 17, despite her daughter's testimony that she was not in pain while she was ill and that Robinson did provide care for her.

Prosecutors said that Robinson did not seek medical treatment for her daughter, who lost 40 pounds over the course of two to four weeks, until she was gravely ill.

Robinson's lawyer said she acted out of ignorance, not malice, and should not have been charged with a crime. The girl, now 14, and her 16-year-old brother are in a foster home.
*****

So let me see if I've got this straight: a mother allows her 13-year-old child to get a navel piercing and when it becomes so infected that the child loses 40 pounds and has to wear a diaper...she doesn't take her to a doctor?

Some people are seriously, SERIOUSLY, too stupid for words.

Excuse Me, Sir? How Long Do I Microwave a Fake Penis?

Woman pleads guilty in fake penis case
Fri Sep 15, 6:51 AM ET

MCKEESPORT, Pa. - A woman pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in connection with a bizarre incident in February that resulted in a fake penis being microwaved at a convenience store.

Leslye Creighton, 41, of Wilkinsburg, entered the plea Wednesday, and authorities dropped the same charge against Vincent Bostic, 31, of Pittsburgh, who has agreed to help pay $425 to replace the store's microwave, police and the couple's defense attorney said.

Police in McKeesport, about 10 miles east of Pittsburgh, said the Feb. 23 incident began when Bostic filled a fake penis with his urine that they said Creighton planned to use to pass a drug test to get a job.

The two stopped at a GetGo! convenience store and, after wrapping the device in a paper towel, asked a store clerk to heat it up in a microwave, police said. Authorities said they believe Creighton wanted the device heated so the urine inside would be at body temperature during the drug test.

The clerk, however, believing the lifelike device to be a severed penis, called police.

Defense attorney William Difenderfer said Creighton faces a maximum punishment of $300 and 90 days in jail when she is sentenced Nov. 15 by McKeesport District Judge Doug Reed. Difenderfer called it "a humorous, but weird, case."

Nutbag Mother: Smoke 'Em if You've Got a Good GPA

Mom admits rewarding son with pot

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - A woman facing drug charges admitted in court that she smoked marijuana with her 13-year-old son, often to reward him for doing his homework.
Amanda Lynn Livelsberger, 30, pleaded guilty to several misdemeanor drug charges Monday in Adams Country court and will be sentenced Nov. 27.

She admitted she had been smoking marijuana with her son since he was 11 and said she had also smoked with two of his friends, ages 17 and 18.

Livelsberger pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of corruption of minors, possession with intent to deliver drug paraphernalia, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of a small amount of marijuana with intent to distribute. The plea agreement did not stipulate a sentence.

*************

Well, well, well. This idiot might just make "Nutbag Mother of the Year" when I do my year-end nutbag wrap-up. She started smoking pot with her kid to "reward" him when he was ELEVEN? What happened to simply expecting a child to do their homework and rewarding them with money (I used to get a dollar per A) when a good report card comes in? Where in the hell did she get her parenting ideas from, an old Cheech & Chong movie or what? And let me tell you...if I EVER found out that the parent of my son's friend was doing drugs with him, I would be LIVID. And why is a 13-year-old hanging out with 17 and 18 year olds? God help this poor kid....he's gonna need some help, to get over the crutches his mother saddled him with.

I need an aspirin...

Nutbag Family: Grandma Made Me Do It

BEDFORD, New Hampshire -- A woman turned herself in to police Wednesday after a store surveillance video captured footage of two children sneaking behind display cases to steal thousands of dollars worth of jewelry, allegedly on instructions from their mother and grandmother.

The woman said she lives in the area and has four children, one age 14 and three younger than 10, Bailey said. All are suspected to have been involved, he said.

The video, taken August 2 at a store called the Consignment Gallery, shows one woman, possibly the children's mother, directing them to pocket certain items. An older woman, believed to be the grandmother, stuffs items down her shirt.

A woman who identified herself as the older woman on the video talked with WMUR-TV on Wednesday and denied stuffing merchandise down her shirt, saying that is where she carries her cell phone, money and other belongings.

Margaret Ryan said she was shopping for a bed with her daughter when her grandchildren began to misbehave. She said her daughter was not stealing jewelry but rather trying to get her children to put back items they had taken.

"I was browsing around the store and the children were wild in the store," Ryan said. "My granddaughter did take a ring, but we didn't realize it until we saw the news."

Detective Matt Fleming said more than $2,000 in jewelry was stolen from the store.

"It's pretty upsetting," Fleming said. "Watching the children methodically move through that jewelry area and take the items out for the mother is just astonishing."

Who Is the Nutbag in Your Neighborhood?

Judge To Decide If Teen's Meows Harassed Neighbor

A Jeannette woman. Alexandria Carasia (78), filed suit against a 14-year-old boy who she claims 'meows' whenever he sees her.

A district judge in Jeannette must decide whether the alleged 'meowing' is a harmless taunt or grounds for misdemeanor harassment.

The boy, whose family chose to get rid of their cat after Carasia complained that it used her flower garden as a litter box, says he's only meowed twice at the woman.

But Carasia says the boy makes sound every time she sees her and that an incident last month was the last straw.

District Judge Joseph DeMarchis heard from both parties yesterday. He is waiting 90 days before ruling, saying he'll decide what to do after seeing how the boy and his neighbor get along in the meantime.
************

Am I alone in this....am I the only person who is thinking, "You actually think someone MEOWING at you is freaking harassment?!?!?"

Everybody and their Uncle Sherman thinks they are being "harassed" these days. But actually FILING SUIT against a 14-year-old boy for MEOWING?

Great balls of fire, I hope this lady can at least blame this bit of stupidity on senility.

Nutbag Foot Kisser Indicted

My comments are in red:

Alleged Library Foot Kisser Indicted

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) -- A grand jury has accused a man of sucking on a woman's toe at the public library in nearby Boardman after he asked to kiss her feet to see her reaction as part of a sociology project. (What professor assigned THIS?!?!?!?)

A Mahoning County grand jury has charged Joseph Colella, 28, on a charge of gross sexual imposition. If convicted, he could be face up to 1 1/2 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

A 27-year-old woman told police that on July 11 Colella asked to kiss her feet. She turned him down but said she relented when he repeatedly insisted, and he began kissing her foot and then sucked on a toe.

She pulled her foot away and the man asked her reaction, to which she replied she was freaked out.

The woman left to clean her foot and he was gone when she returned. She called police and picked him out of a photo lineup.

Detective Michelle DiMartino said Colella also was a suspect in a similar case in 2000. (Another "sociology project?")

Colella could not be reached for comment. (maybe for once, HIS foot was in
his mouth?)

Nutbag Extraordinaire: Ann Coulter

I have never much been a fan of uber-conservative bitch Ann Coulter. But now, she's gone waaaaaaaaayyyyyy over the line. So over the line, she can't see it from where she's standing, gloating and ensuring her place in the Nutbag Hall of Shame.

Ann Coulter Attacks 9-11 Widows

No one is much surprised that outspoken conservative columnist Ann Coulter attacks environmentalists and Bill Clinton in her new book, "Godless: The Church of Liberalism."

But Coulter has raised eyebrows by taking aim at a different target: The widows of 9/11 victims.

Calling them "broads" who are "enjoying" their husbands' deaths,
Coulter made her attack on the widows public yesterday, through the publication of the book and during a raucous appearance on NBC's "The Today Show."

"I was shocked that she was focusing on us," said Lorie Van Auken of East Brunswick, who lost her husband, Kenneth, on 9/11, and who was personally attacked in Coulter's book.

Much of Coulter's television interview consisted of the show's host, Matt Lauer, reading portions of the book aloud, including this passage about the 9/11 widows:

"These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. I have never seen people enjoying their husbands' death so much."

**********

I don't know if this was a poorly-advised publicity stunt in order to sell more books, or if this woman just has a heart of pure, black coal. Either way, she should be (but is clearly not) ashamed.

Nutbag Parents: Another Dryer Disaster

Back in December, I brought you the story of a mother who killed her infant child in a clothes dryer. Sadly, this nutbag appears to have sparked a trend.

Toddler burnt when put in clothes dryer

Wednesday May 31 08:39 AEST

A 13-month-old Perth baby suffered horrific burns when she was put in a clothes dryer, police say.

The baby was left with her mother's boyfriend at a home in suburban Warwick while the woman went to a gym for about an hour last Thursday, police said.

The baby spilt liquid on herself and the man put her in the clothes dryer and turned it on, police said.

"The person we allege has done the act has stated that he has put the child into a clothes tumble dryer, closed the door and turned it on for a couple of minutes," Senior Detective Deb Newman said.

"The child had burns to both feet, to one of her hands, burns and bruising to her back and bruising to her forehead," she said. "The injuries are horrific. In my years of being a police officer I have not seen or heard of this type of injury before."

The mother returned home to find her daughter suffering serious burns but her boyfriend did not mention the dryer, she said.

Police investigated after the hospital where the baby was treated informed them the child's injuries were suspicious and highly unusual.

Snr Det Newman said the mother was distraught but the toddler should make a full recovery and be released from the burns unit at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children later this week.

Samuel Marc Barnes Siddall, 21, of suburban Beldon, appeared in Perth Magistrates' Court on Tuesday charged with causing bodily harm or danger.

He was granted bail on condition that he did not approach, or contact, the mother and child. He is due to appear in the Joondalup Magistrates' Court at a date to be set next month.

I think my original comments on the first such incident say it best: I cannot fathom the evil that resides in some people.

~~**~~NUTBAGS OF THE YEAR: 2005!~~**~~

Yes, ZPT fans, it's that time of year again...time for us to look back with shock and shame at the nuttiest of the nutbags for the year 2005 (to read 2004's list, click here.)

How does one qualify for Nutbag status? It must be an individual (not a group or organization, although many Nutbags belong to questionable groups or organizations) who defies such human traits as sympathy, empathy, logic, intelligence and common sense. Nutbags are often heinous persons with no care whatsoever for the harm they wreck upon themselves, innocent victims and society at large. We all know Nutbags in our day-to-day lives...these Nutbags "distinguish" themselves by becoming famous or semi-famous for their horrendous (or just plain stupid) activities.

And now...on to the list!

~*~NUTBAGS OF THE YEAR: 2005~*~

NUTBAG FATHER OF THE YEAR:
Harley Quint Young

A former Garfield County man, Harley Quint Young, sentenced to prison for 30 years for beating his four-and-a-half-month-old daughter to death after reportedly coming home from work in "a bad mood" is upset that he was given jail time.

According to deputy district attorney Gretchen Larson, Young told her, "We're one of the better American families. We don't beat our kids and we don't do drugs in front of them." He also stated that the whole thing "sucks."

NUTBAG MOTHER OF THE YEAR:
Lakeisha Adams

Adams allegedly placed her 3-month-old son in a clothes dryer...and turned it on. The infant, who did not survive, suffered third-degree burns and blunt force trauma to the head.

THE MARY KAY LETOURNEA NUTBAG TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD:
Lindsay Renee Allen

A teacher's assistant at Wicomico Middle School, Lindsay Renee Allen, has been charged with 96 counts of sexual assualt, child abuse and perversion and stands accused of having sex with six male students between the ages of 12 and 16 over a period of more than eight months, according to Wicomico County law enforcement officials.

Most of the sexual encounters allegedly occurred at Allen's home, where the special education aide resides with her 2-year-old daughter and a roommate.

NUTBAG CHEATER OF THE YEAR:
Wayne Brightly

Bronx teacher Brightly allegedly paid one Rubin Leitner, who is developmentally disabled, $2 to take his state certification exam, which he needed to pass or risk losing his $59k-per-year job. Brightly had flunked the test repeatedly. In fact, that's how he got caught: the illegal stand-in (who looks nothing like teacher Wayne Brightly) not only passed the high-stakes test, he scored so much better than the teacher had previously that the state knew something was wrong.

CELEBRITY NUTBAG CHEATER OF THE YEAR:
Jude Law

For shame, Jude. For shame.

NUTBAG LAWYER OF THE YEAR:
Richard Phillips

British media reported with glee the tale of Richard Phillips, who e-mailed the secretary to ask her to pay a four-pound ($7.30) dry-cleaning bill after she accidentally spilled tomato ketchup on his trousers, oblivious of the fact that the secretary was not able to answer the email...as she was attending her mother's funeral.

NUTBAG COACH OF THE YEAR:
Mark R. Downs Jr.

The T-ball coach allegedly paid one of his players $25 to hit an 8-year-old mentally disabled teammate in the head with a baseball so he wouldn't have to put the boy in the game.

"The coach was very competitive," state police Trooper Thomas B. Broadwater said. "He wanted to win."

NUTBAG PARENTS OF THE YEAR:
Ronnie Paris Sr. & Nysheerah Paris

These Tampa-area nutbags are truly deserving of this award. The father is accused of abusing thier 3-year-old child, Ronnie Paris Jr...beating the boy to death so he wouldn't be a "sissy." And the mother? She never called authorities to report the abuse, beause she was "scared someone would take her baby away."

``He was trying to teach him how to fight,'' said Shanita Powell, Nysheerah Paris' sister. ``He was concerned that the child might be gay.''

NUTBAG BULLY OF THE YEAR:
Rev. Fred Phelps

Now, there are so many reasons to dislike Phelps. His "God Hates Fags" website. His picketing of funerals of gay people, American soldiers killed in Iraq, and even the West Virginia miners who recently died in an explosion. All good, sound reasons. But this year, Phelps wasn't content to simply attack the dead...he wanted to bully elementary schoolgirls, too.

His Kansas-based evangelical group planned to picket Englesby Intermediate School after a 12-year-old student won a "Women In History" essay contest writing about openly gay comedienne Ellen DeGeneres. A flier produced by the group includes a photo of the school and a grotesque devil. The diatribe attacks the staff, labeling it a “homo-fascist regime,” among other things. No word as to whether or not he demanded the child's lunch money, too.

NUTBAG GRAVE ROBBER OF THE YEAR:
The unidentified thieves of the bones of "Masterpiece Theater" host Alistair Cooke

I usually don't give Nutbag Awards to nameless persons...but these jerks so plainly deserve it.

NUTBAG HOMOPHOBE OF THE YEAR:
Gerald Allen

Republican Alabama lawmaker Gerald Allen says homosexuality is an unacceptable lifestyle. Under his bill, public school libraries could no longer buy new copies of plays or books by gay authors, or about gay characters.

"I don't look at it as censorship," says State Representative Gerald Allen. "I look at it as protecting the hearts and souls and minds of our children."

HOW THE NUTBAG STOLE CHRISTMAS AWARD:
Ransford George Perry

Perry, a Wal-Mart Santa Claus, was arrested for allegedly exposing himself to a 15-year-old boy and attempting to have the boy engage in oral sex with him at his home. Mrs. Claus was unavailable for comment.

AUCTION NUTBAG OF THE YEAR:
Terri Ilagan

For legally changing her name to GoldenPalace.com to the tune of $15,199 after an online auction...this mother of five takes the cake. Or the fortune cookie. Or what have you.

NUTBAG HAS-BEEN OF THE YEAR:
Gary Glitter

Former British glam rocker Gary Glitter was formally charged with committing obscene acts with two girls aged 10 and 11 at a Vietnamese resort town. Glitter, 61, who won fame as a flamboyant glam rocker in the 1970s, is accused of kissing and engaging in other physical acts with the girls at his rental home in the southern coastal town of Vung Tau.

NUTBAG GRIM REAPER AWARD:
Randall Terry

You remember Mr. Terry...he's the force behind the media circus that became the last days of Terri Schiavo's life. But he's not through yet, folks. Now he wants to make sure that NO ONE can die with dignity...even those who have left specific written instructions. He's backing legislation currently before the Wisconsin Senate that allows doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other medical personnel who morally disagree with the guidelines regarding feeding and hydration tubes to ignore living wills and advance directives. Because after all, when you are in pain and dying...the medical staff's feelings should be your first consideration.

THE EBENEEZER SCROOGE NUTBAG OF THE YEAR AWARD:
Alisher71

Many people looking for a good deal on the holiday's hottest items turned to eBay and found...one hell of a scam artist. Meet Alisher71, who to date has swindled eBayers of more than $130,000. Bah humbug.

NUTBAG AUTHORS OF THE YEAR:
Daniel Rosenberg & Richard Kirshenbaum,
authors of Closing the Deal: Two Married Guys Take You from Single Miss to Wedded Bliss.

By treating marriage like a lottery and women like cattle, these guys are on a two-man mission to bring back the 1950's. Read my post on these nutbags here.

NUTBAG MANAGER OF THE YEAR:
Unnamed Manager of Loews Theater in Wallkill

Seven-year-old Anthony Pratti, who has cerebal palsy and autism, was thrown out of a matinee showing of the G-rated documentary "March of the Penguins" for laughing too loud.

Anthony, who uses a wheelchair, was with his parents, his sister and his grandmother at the Loews Cineplex theaters in the Galleria at Crystal Run when the incident occured. The family sat in the wheelchair section provided by the theater. Anthony was having a good time, said his mom, Gina Pratti. "He was laughing, but he really wasn't much louder than any of the other kids," she said. About 15 minutes into the film, one of the theater's managers approached the family, and told them Anthony was laughing too loud. They offered to try to quiet him, but the manager brusquely told them the boy had to go. Outraged, the family followed the manager to the lobby, where they were told they all didn't have to leave – just the boy in the wheelchair.

"I said to him, what are we supposed to do, wheel him outside and leave him there?" she said.

NUTBAG EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR:
Dean Wooten

Wooten, a 65-year-old Wal-Mart greeter, was fired for welcoming customers with a computer-generated photograph of himself wearing nothing but a plastic Wal-Mart sack.

Wooten applied for unemployment, but a judge ruled that "a reasonable person would know the act of showing a naked body wearing a Wal-Mart sack would not be good for the employer's business."

NUTBAG WEATHER FORECASTER OF THE YEAR:
Michelle Kosinski, the "Today" show

During a live shot about rising waters in Wayne, N.J., reporter Michelle Kosinski appeared in a canoe on a suburban street – attempting to dramatize the severity of the flooding disaster.

A few seconds after she went live, however, a pair of men walked in front of the camera – the waters barely covering the tops of their boots. Oops.

NUTBAG BRIDE-TO-BE OF THE YEAR:
Jennifer Wilbanks

Georgia's Jennifer Wilbanks, better known as the "Runaway Bride," disappeared just before her wedding, hopped on a bus to Las Vegas, and turned up days later in Albuquerque, falsely claiming to have been kidnapped. A media circus ensued.

Many speculated cold feet was to blame, which Jennifer denied.

"I had a host of compelling issues which seemed out of control," she said.
Obviously.

NUTBAG IN NEED OF A SEXUAL-HARASSMENT SEMINAR:
Saeed Akbar

Glasgow Sheriff Court was told that Saeed Akbar, a manager at an interpreting and translation company, "had wanted a bit of excitement". And he sought it, while conducting an interview with a potential employee. Akbar, 35, left the interview room and came back in to speak to his female victim naked and clutching a clipboard.
When the job candidate refused to strip as well, he put his clothes on and attempted to continue the interview as normal, the court was told. The woman, however, fled and contacted police.

Akbar, from Fife, said: "I wanted a bit of excitement that afternoon, that's purely all it was."

He initially told police his strip was a consensual "role play" as part of his "tough interviewing technique".
I'd hate to see how he handles terminations....

NUTBAG PEEPING TOM OF THE YEAR:
Larry Gold

Lawyer Larry Gold says he installed a minicamera in the bathroom at his law office, where his three female secretaries work, to "catch people smoking pot."

Instead, the camera caught a secretary using the toilet. She spotted the camera and went to the police. They charged Gold, a lawyer since 1989, with three counts of unlawful surveillance, a felony.

WHEN NUTBAGS ATTACK AWARD:
Lorlie M. Gatenbein

This Idaho woman was charged with felony injury to a child after dousing a 2-month-old baby girl with pepper spray while feuding with the infant's family in a Wal-Mart.

Gantenbein in a telephone interview on Wednesday denied using the pepper spray. She said her 16-year-old daughter used the spray, but did so in "self-defense." The baby has not been charged with assualting anyone in the Gantenbein family.

NUTBAG RACIST OF THE YEAR:
Judge Barry Tatum

Meet Wilson County, Tennessee Family Court Judge Barry Tatum, who is fond of telling immigrant mothers who appear in his court to "learn English or else."

Take a recent case involving a woman from Oaxaca, Mexico, who had been brought before Judge Tatum after she'd refused to immunize her kids or show up for Children's Services appointments. At the custody hearing, Judge Tatum instructed the mother to learn English and use birth control.

Tatum made another such order to a Mexican woman appearing before him on charges of child neglect. He set a court date for six months, denying her request for counseling and instructing the woman to learn to "speak English at a fourth-grade level" by that time or lose custody of her daughter, according to the woman's attorney, Jerry Gonzalez. He's made such orders at least five other times. Gonzalez said the judge was setting the mother up for failure. "She probably doesn't have a sixth-grade education. I daresay the judge himself, an educated man, could not learn to speak Spanish to a fourth-grade level in six months," Gonzalez said. "He gave her an impossible task."

NUTBAG BABYSITTER OF THE YEAR:
Juan Reyes

37-year-old Reyes was charged with child endangerment after one of two toddlers he was baby-sitting was found drunk, authorities said. Deputies peered through the window of a New York home and found the extremely intoxicated Reyes passed out with the two children, ages 2 and 3, wandering around the house. He was the only adult in the home.

The deputies also noticed the 2-year-old was having difficulty standing, had bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol and was lethargic.

The toddler was taken to the hospital, where tests revealed he was legally intoxicated, with a blood-alcohol content of 0.094 percent, the sheriff's office said. In New York, a driver is considered drunk with an alcohol content of 0.08 percent or greater.

At the time, the children's parents were at a hospital, where the mother was giving birth.

MORNING TELEVISION NUTBAGS OF THE YEAR:
The Hosts of "The View"

"The View" isn't fond of breastfeeding...and they're happy to let everyone know it. Barbara Walters seems to lead the pack in this: she has complained about being seated near a nursing mom on a plane and commented that "you can't breastfeed triplets," which came as a pretty big shock to the thousands of moms breastfeeding multiples (including triplets) every day. Star Jones added, "That's not what breasts are for!" "Disgusting" is another term the ladies on this show have used to describe nursing, they've called members of La Leche League "nuts" and applauded fellow commentator Elizabeth when she gave up nursing after only one month.

A nurse-in was held in front of ABC studios to protest the anti-breastfeeding comments. Instead of apologizing, or even conceding that her statements may have offended some people...Barbara Walters chastised the women for "making a big deal out of a little comment." This is the same woman, you'll note, who makes people cry on national television for "little comments" for a living.

In response to the nurse-in, the ladies at "The View" agreed to address the issue in an upcoming show...but decided to talk about Madonna instead.

NUTBAG CON CARNE:
Anna Ayala

Ayala claimed to have found a finger in a bowl of Wendy's chili in San Jose. Turns out it was a hoax, and and the finger came from a deceased relative. The the scam cost the fast-food chain millions, and made people all over America quesy. Bon appetit.

SEXIST NUTBAG OF THE YEAR:
Larry Summers

Harvard president Summers said women might not have the "genes for science" and caused such an outcry, he's been forced to try to make up for his sexist rubbish with tenure offers, study commissions and millions in recruitment funds.

NUTBAG DEFENDANT OF THE YEAR:
Michael Jackson

He dances on the roof of his SUV outside the courthouse and wears pajamas inside it. Remember when people thought the term "Wacko Jacko" was a bit harsh?

NUTBAG DIVORCE COURT JUDGE OF THE YEAR:
Paul A. Bastine

In Seattle, Shawnna J. Hughes was granted a divorce. But barely a week later, the 27-year-old medical assistant was back before a judge, who rescinded the order after learning Hughes was pregnant by another man.

"Not only is it the policy of this court, it is the policy of the state that you cannot dissolve a marriage when one of the parties is pregnant," Superior Court Judge Paul A. Bastine told Hughes.

Experts said there was no blanket prohibition in the laws of this or any other state against pregnant women getting divorced; several Seattle-area family law practitioners said that they had obtained divorces for pregnant clients. "I cannot think of any policy that would require this woman to stay married to a person who was in prison for abusing her," said Carol Bruch, a law professor at UC Davis.

Further roiling controversy in the case, Bastine told Shawnna Hughes that she had forced a prolongation of her marriage on herself with the "intentional act" of getting pregnant.

"You have created the situation by your own actions that delay your opportunity to dissolve your marriage," he said in the hearing.

NUTBAG FAMILY COURT JUDGE OF THE YEAR:
Cale J. Bradford

An Indianapolis father is appealing a Marion County judge's unusual order that prohibits him and his ex-wife from exposing their child to "non-mainstream religious beliefs and rituals." The parents practice Wicca, a contemporary pagan religion that emphasizes a balance in nature and reverence for the earth.

Cale J. Bradford, chief judge of the Marion Superior Court, kept the unusual provision in the couple's divorce decree last year over their fierce objections, court records show. The court failed to explain how exposing the boy to Wicca's beliefs and practices would harm him.

NUTBAG FOOT-IN-MOUTH AWARD:
President George W. Bush

"Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job."

U.S. President George W. Bush to Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Michael Brown, during his first visit to the region devastated by hurricane Katrina. Brown was later blamed for the federal government's inadequate response to the hurricane.

AND THE WINNER OF THE NUTBAG
OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR 2005 IS....

TOM CRUISE!

Could there be any doubt as to WHY Mr. Cruise deserves this accolade? He's been a busy little nut all year long: from jumping on Oprah's coach and sucking face with his girlfriend, Katie Holmes, whenever a camera is in the vicinity to calling interviewers "glib" and telling them to "put their manners back in," he's been the nut to end all nuts these past twelve months. And then there's his attacks on Brooke Sheilds and anti-depressants, the creepy Scientology weirdo he has following pregnant Katie around, the completely psycho reaction to being squirted in the face with a toy microphone and the sonogram he bought for "home use." Yes, Tom...we all loved you when you danced around in your underwear or were telling us we complete you. But now? We really, really wish you'd stop jumping on couches and consider lying down on one.

Thanks to everyone who has made this list possible...YOU'RE ALL NUTS!

A Trio of Nutbags!

Just when I think that I have seen all the nutbags 2005 has to offer, I get bombarded by these three dolts. As always, my comments are in red:

Woman Tries Swallowing Phone
to End Spat With Lover

BLUE SPRINGS, Missouri (Dec. 24) -- It was a conversation stopper.

A lovers' dispute over a cell phone took a serious turn early Friday morning
when the woman ended the spat by swallowing the phone whole.

Police said they received a call at 4:52 a.m. from a man who said his girlfriend was having trouble breathing.

When they arrived at the house they found the 24-year-old woman had a cell phone lodged in her throat.

"He wanted the phone and she wouldn't give it to him, so she attempted to swallow it," Detective Sgt. Steve Decker of the Blue Springs Police Department. "She just put the entire phone in her mouth so he couldn't get it."

Police said an ambulance transported the woman to St. Mary's Medical Center
in Blue Springs. A hospital spokeswoman said she could not give details about the woman's health since police have not released her identity.
(Ok, I've been in arguments with my husband before. I've been pretty pissed off. But I
have never been angry enough to try to swallow a
CELL PHONE.
What the hell was
she thinking?)

Tragic Love Triangle
Ends in Murder

The small voice of 7-year-old Katie Marsh reached through the dark, telling
a 9-1-1 dispatcher her mother was mortally wounded.

It happened at a cottage in Ashtabula County, near the shore of Pymatuning Lake. About 9 pm, 32-year-old John Marsh allegedly broke in and shot his estranged wife, 30-year-old Jennifer and her boyfriend 32-year-old David Beach.

The bloody confrontation happened right in front of Katie and her brother Lucas.

Marsh grabbed his 4-year-old son, as his daughter hid in a closet. After a frantic search, officers found Marsh at his nearby home, with the boy unharmed.

Marsh's father says his son and daughter-in-law split up in July. His wife was frightened enough to get a restraining order, making John give up his weapons. Neighbors say bitter harassment continued between the two.

The kids, including the couple's oldest son Curtis, are staying with Jennifer's relatives. The community is very small and lots of people know some or all the people in this tragic love triangle. What no one ever expected was that hard feelings would end in murder.

In addition to the Marsh's three children, David Beach had three kids of his own. Meanwhile, John Marsh remains behind bars.
(This man should ROT behind those bars. What this article
doesn't tell you is that before the little girl hid, she tried to call 911...and her father took the phone from her. This was prior to
her courageous call that, in all likelyhood, saved her brother's life. But you know what REALLY pisses me off about this story? Click the link and watch the video. This asshole's father is
actually blaming the VICTIM. She "drove him to it," according
to Grandpa of the Year there. Holy cow, I hope these kids never see Dad or Grandpa again...for their own sakes...)

Man Charged After Toddler Found Drunk

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. Dec 29, 2005 A 37-year-old man was charged with child endangerment after one of two toddlers he was baby-sitting was found drunk, authorities said.

Suffolk County sheriff's deputies investigating a family court case peered through the window of a Patchogue home Tuesday and saw Juan Reyes passed out with the children wandering around the house.

They managed to rouse Reyes, who was the only adult at home with the two toddlers, ages 2 and 3, according to the sheriff's office. The deputies said Reyes appeared extremely intoxicated.

The second child was taken into the custody of Child Protective Services.

At the time, the children's parents were at a hospital, where the mother was giving birth.

Robert Clifford, spokesman for the Suffolk County district attorney, said the children's family lives at the house where the toddlers were found. Reyes also gave that as his address during his arraignment.
(Let me see if I have this straight: the parents, 2 kids and a drunk are all living in the same house. Mom goes to the hospital to have baby #3, and leaves the kids with...the drunk, who drinks himself into a stupor and doesn't notice the kid drinking enough alcohol to lay out a linebacker. That kid could easily have died from alcohol poisoning, and who knows what the long-term affects of this will be. And child protective services only removed ONE of the remaining two kids? If these parents are this fucking stupid, this fucking irresponsible...why would anyone think they should be trusted with a newborn?
Eek gads.)

Nutbag Mother Kills Infant in Clothes Dryer

My comments follow the article:

BOGALUSA, La. — A mother was booked on a charge of first-degree murder for allegedly placing her 3-month-old son in a clothes dryer and turning it on.

The infant had third-degree burns over 50 percent of his body and suffered blunt force trauma to the head, the St. Tammany Parish coroner said.

Police Sgt. Darryl Darden said Lakeisha Adams, 18, called police to her home on Monday to report that someone had killed her child. When officers arrived, they found Jailand Adams on a sofa. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Darden said Adams admitted during questioning to putting the infant in the dryer and turning it on, but did not say why.

Adams also has a 1-year-old child who was placed in state custody, police said.

If convicted, Adams faces death by injection or a life sentence. The first-degree murder charge is mandatory under Louisiana law because the victim was under age 12.

*********************************

I cannot fathom the evil that resides in some people, the absolute lack of human decency, compassion or basic motherly instinct.

To place a tiny infant is a clothes dryer...rarely do I say this, but I do this time, wholeheartedly: lethal injection is too good for her.

I also must question the state here...why was the one-year-old taken from this mother, but not the three-month-old? Why was this baby left to its mother's deviant hands, to die in this hideous fashion?

I am sickened, sickened, sickened at the world today, at a world which can and has produced such a monster as Lakiesha Adams.

May that poor child rest in peace....

More of Everyone's Favorite Hollywood Nutbag: Tom Cruise!

For those of you who aren't familiar with the fabulous blog PostSecret, it's a collection of postcards, each proclaiming the sender's own personal secret. I've been a fan for quite some time.

And although the humor on this one is a bit mean-spirited...I wonder how many of us have had the same thought about Tom and Katie:

I Hope Katie Holmes...
