Venting: Oxycodone Shortage!

There is a nationwide oxycodone shortage. NO ONE has any. To make matters worse, everyone is telling a different story. One pharmacy blamed the FDA and their "guidelines" as to how much of the med can be made. Another blamed a recall. One told my dh that there was a "problem with a precursor" to the drug. News articles are also confusing. Most blame the FDA, but some seem to doubt there's even a shortage at all. The FDA itself denied it until a few days ago. Their website now acknowledges the shortage, but no one seems to know when it will end.

I knew none of this, until this weekend. I tried to get my RX filled. No dice. One pharmacist told me point blank to get an RX for something else...no one knows when this will end.

Hey, great idea! At least it's something. So I start calling my doctor this morning. He isn't in. I am told to speak to the prescription coordinator (a useless person, as I know from long experience with him). His voice mail is full. I call again and again. The voice mail remains full, and the receptionists are at a loss as to how to help me.

I decide to try again after lunch, as sometimes the Prescription Dick will clear his messages then.

Not once of the half-dozen times that I spoke to a receptionist, did any of them tell me that THE MOTHER FUCKING OFFICE WAS CLOSING AT 1PM FOR THE HOLIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WTF? It's President's Day, people. Since when did doctor's offices close for THAT? These assholes were open all day New Year's, but President's Day? Nope, gotta take off for THAT!

I'm going down there in the morning and I am not leaving without a prescription for SOMETHING. If they give me a hassle about my pain management contract and no substitutions and whatnot, I will kindly point out that I would take the meds IF ANYONE HAD THE FUCKING THINGS.

It's either that, or admit me, because I can't do this another night. The later it gets, the worse it gets. I am scared shitless right about now, and all I have is some nasty morphine cough syrup left over from the last time I had pneumonia.

I hate the FDA today. How hard could it be to unclench and let them make some more pills??????

DUDE! I FEEL YOUR PAIN (literally)!!! This is ridiculous! Why even make a drug if you're just going to take it away the SECOND it is prescribed "more than allowed." I mean seriously, how much sense does that make? NONE! My script is due for a fill on the 26th and I KNOW I'm not going to be able to find it anywhere. The last two times I was lucky and went out of state to find it but those pahrmacies have since dried up. I really don't want to have to buy it off the street but it looks like that's what's going to end up happening because I CANNOT go without this medication. Email me if you find out more info and I'll do the same!!! jordyncosta@gmail.com

Just another case of the powers-that-be truly not giving a royal shit about the suffering of the chronically ill.

Wow. I had no idea. I guess we're lucky BR moved on to the pain patches last summer. I'm sure pharmacy hopping with an Oxycodone script would raise some kind of red flag in Texas -- no matter what the reason.

Hope you found some relief!

This is crazy! I have been stressing the past 3 months on refill day wondering if I will be able to find a pharmacy with enough of the 30mg Oxycodone to fill my script of #180.

Last refill I had to drive 20 minutes and was charged 2x the normal cost. Talk about sickening, the pharmacists of the independent pharmacies that can adjust their prices are fucking price gouging us poor people without insurance because they know we will pay whatever to get our meds or be in terrible and in withdrawal! Since I don't have insurance, switching to OxyContin is not an option because it is so expensive. That is why my doctor prescribed the IR version in the first place.

Now 2 weeks before my refill I am worrying about whether I will be lucky enough to find a pharmacy with them still in stock and how much the greedy pharmacists are going to charge me for them. My husband got his the other day and I called around the day before to find a pharmacy with them in stock so we didn't need to drive from place to place.

I really think this is some kinda a cruel joke the DEA is playing on pain patients. Every form of Oxycodone is all of a sudden not available? Not Oxycodone IR, Oxy/APAP combos, or Oxycodone liquid? Someone needs to do some explaining?

How do you like this?? If you have insurance the pharmacy kicks you out saying they do not have the meds... Then you go back a couple housof searching later to find them filling the scripts to others (cash buyers) So you go to the counter and say ok leave my insurance out of it and fill it.. and they do; for a HUGE dollar amount!! CAN NOT be legal or ethical...

Hey, stopped by while researching the oxycodone shortage. The MAIN reason for the shortage is that ETHEX got their oxy recalled because of bad manufacturing. This left the other 2 or 3 manufacturers to keep up the supply. This is a big task, because, face it, they have to manufacture other products too. They only have so many machines that can do so many drugs at a time. This is no FDA/DEA conspiracy. Ethex was making shitty product and not following GMP, so to protect you consumers, it was recalled. I am sure the DEA is issuing variances to the other companies so that they can make up the shortage and not get in trouble because of the amount.

The problem lies with Al Quida and the 'war on terror'. It seems the terrorists are funding operations with heroin originating in Afghanistan. The FDA loosened up on oxycodone and made it possible for 'junkies' to get prescriptions easier. Heroin sales are at a 20 year low on the streets. Success ! WRONG - with the IV users having their 'fix' more readily available and with the misconception that legal pharmaceuticals aren't as bad for you as heroin more and more young people are hopelessly addicted to 'roxies'. Added to this increased demand for them is the FDA's shutting down production of three manufacturers.
Now there is a shortage for the pain sufferer and the junkie. The pain sufferer who is disabled and on fixed income cannot afford the increased price of the drug as the drug stores have almost tripled their prices. They know that the junkies and those selling the pills to the junkies can afford the increased costs and are taking advantage. I don't advocate letting heroin get popular again (but you know this will happen). Admit your plan was faulty; impose restrictions on doctors prescribing strong opiods; replace an earlier failed attempt at solving the heroin problem by closing the methadone clinics (merely a free fix for the j's) and replacing them with suboxone clinics; collect data on price paid/ price sold for both before and during the shortage and prosecute aggressively the drugs stores that are price gouging. ifyoucannotcall@writeme.com

My husband takes 150 milligrams of this a day...he has been slowly increasing over 3 years because of a car accident which was not his fault but the boy who hit him did not have enough insurance. He got his prescription filled in December and it was fine. Filled in january and it was fine. February again it was fine...no mention of the shortage and finally in March they tell him sorry we dont have it anymore. Dont know when we will get it. So we start calling around. Nobody has it. Finally two weeks later he gets some. He was taking some other weaker pills the doctor prescribed to hold him over. He was sick all month long though because it screwed up his system so badly. Now he went to the doctor last week again and they got him something else which seems to be helping but again the other meds he was taking are out at the pharmacist. I told him he should just talk to his doctor about permanently switching his medication. We pay cash every month for the oxycodone and it is very expensive. Our pharmacist gives us a huge break because we are cash customers but I know not all pharmacists are that way. I just hope the people who have made this shortage happen will figure out how badly it is hurting those who actually NEED the medicine and are not simply taking it as a means to get a high.
